American squirrels are bigger, stronger and more aggressive than the European red squirrels. They also carry a virus that kills off the reds, and are therefor a menace to the UK's native squirrel population.
As the reds numbers fall, hunters are trapping and killing grey squirrels to cull their numbers, and selling off the meat to high end butchers.
There's the usual complaint about how ethical it is to shoot a caged squirrel in the back of the head with an air rifle while there are other options available such as contraception ... not exactly sure how that would work but somehow I doubt it will be a bit more costly than this method.
Maybe this will help to bring hunting back into normality in the UK, I certainly hope so.

Dealing with pigs ...
No, not our boys in blue, hogs, pigs, boars and the like.
Wild pigs are an old ace in California, I even blogged about them slightly in the past. And right now, they're at it again. Dozens of pigs are sometimes seen wreaking havoc in peoples gardens and yards.
The authorities are allow people to apply for permits that would allow them to shoot these critters.
I was under the impression that you could shoot feral hogs without a permit if they're causing property damage, guess I was wrong.
Either way, pork ribs and bacon are yummy, their population needs culling and meat is expensive ... it's an omen.

Fox attacks woman, man shoots fox, and wife.

Residents of San diego, beware of squirrels
Some Squirrels in San Diego have tested positive for the pleague!
If you like squirrel hunting, it would be well advised to give that a rest, as the flees of your quarry might infect you after you collect the carcass.

Self defence against a crocodile.
So two men were out collecting eggs at an Australian crocodile farm when they are attacked by one of the reptiles.
The croc grabs one man by the arm and tries to pull him down, the other man grabs a firearm.
The CNN article sais that the croc had let go after the first shot, but also mentions a second shot which struch the victim in the arm.
Fortunately, none of his wounds are life-threathening.
My take, it was a follow up shot immediately after the first (doubletapped), or a negligent discharge. I know my hands might be shaking if I ever saw a working buddy get grabbed by a crocodile!
Quote from the victim:"Thank god he's such a good shot"
